SPORTIME TENNIS CENTER, RANDALL’S ISLAND
Working within a modest budget, the design strategy employed a six-bay pre-engineered steel structure, clad in green and blue metal panels that give the building a light, vibrant character. The clubhouse, set in the easternmost bay and rotated toward the entrance plaza, houses amenities, classrooms, and fitness areas. This inflection brings natural light into the interior, while the bleacher seating penetrates the metal shell, extending into the mezzanine plane.
A series of dormers emerge from the roof, introducing daylight and cross-ventilation through a chimney effect.
Developed through a partnership between NYC Parks, Sportime Clubs, and the Randall’s Island Park Alliance, the complex offers 30 regulation courts, three youth training courts, and a stadium exhibition court. In winter, air-supported structures ensure year-round play. Beyond sports facilities, the Tennis Center acts as a civic hub, combining recreation, education, and community, while incorporating advanced sustainability strategies and exceeding NYC flood resilience standards.
